Every Star Wars Lightsaber Duel Ranked

“Your father’s lightsaber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster, but an elegant weapon for a more civilised age.”

Few cinematic devices are as instantly thrilling as a well-executed sword fight. Beyond spectacle, blade clashes force protagonists and antagonists into decisive confrontations, often letting them settle emotional and narrative stakes through both words and motion. From The Adventures of Robin Hood to The Princess Bride and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, cinema’s best swordplay is memorable and meaningful. The Star Wars saga is no exception: its lightsaber duels combine choreography, character drama and iconic locations to produce some of the most unforgettable moments in the series.

In this feature we rank every major lightsaber fight from the Star Wars theatrical films, from least to best (excluding visions, dreams and purely projected sequences). The ranking considers visual style and choreography, emotional and character context, and how effectively each fight advances story and theme.

14. Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi & Yoda vs Count Dooku (Attack of the Clones)

Yoda Attack of the Clones

“It is obvious that this contest cannot be decided by our knowledge of the Force… but by our skill with a lightsaber.”

After Yoda and the clone army rescue Anakin and Obi-Wan, the two Jedi pursue Count Dooku into a cramped, dimly lit hangar for a confrontation. The concept is strong, but the execution weakens it: muddy visuals, disorienting cuts in the early exchanges and the dated CGI used for Yoda’s later acrobatics make the sequence feel awkward. Ultimately it functions mainly as a plot device to explain Anakin’s lost arm, rather than as a truly satisfying duel.

13. Anakin Skywalker & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Count Dooku (Revenge of the Sith)

Anakin Obi-Wan vs Dooku

“Your swords please – we don’t want to make a mess of things in front of the Chancellor!”

Onboard a separatist capital ship, Anakin and Obi-Wan confront Count Dooku while attempting to rescue Chancellor Palpatine. The choreography in Episode III is markedly improved, and the duel is brisk and intense. It ends quickly, though, when Anakin’s fury tips the balance—an early dramatic step toward his fall. The scene works better as a turning point in Anakin’s arc than as a long-form action highlight.

12. Mace Windu vs Darth Sidious (Revenge of the Sith)

Mace Windu vs Palpatine

“It’s treason, then!”

Mace Windu confronts Chancellor Palpatine in his office after Palpatine reveals himself as Darth Sidious. The sequence is significant for the saga—Palpatine’s turn from politician to openly violent manipulator is crucial—but the duel itself is hampered by clear constraints. Because Ian McDiarmid performs much of the scene without a stunt double, some exchanges are deliberately slowed or substituted with early CGI. Still, the moment’s dramatic importance—especially Anakin’s entrance and decision—keeps it compelling.

11. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs General Grievous (Revenge of the Sith)

Obi-Wan vs General Grievous

“You fool! I have been trained in your Jedi arts by Count Dooku!”

On Utapau, Obi-Wan finally tracks down General Grievous. The fight benefits from Grievous’s striking design and Ewan McGregor’s grounded performance, but it never quite reaches its potential. Grievous’s multi-armed, saber-spinning theatrics are memorable, and there are strong visual moments of intensity, yet the sequence is interrupted and ultimately concluded in ways that feel abrupt, including the surprising final reliance on a blaster.

10. Qui-Gon Jinn vs Darth Maul (The Phantom Menace)

Qui-Gon vs Darth Maul first battle

“He’s well trained in the ways of the Dark Side.”

This opening clash on Naboo gives a taste of the Prequel trilogy’s faster, more acrobatic style. Ray Park’s athletic Maul and Liam Neeson’s imposing Qui-Gon make the duel convincing, compact and exciting. It’s short but hints at the spectacular climax to come, and it introduces the franchise’s renewed appetite for balletic lightsaber choreography.

9. Yoda vs Darth Sidious (Revenge of the Sith)

Yoda vs Darth Sidious

“I have waited a long time for this moment, my little green friend!”

Yoda’s duel with Palpatine takes place in the vast Senate chamber, a grand setting that reflects the magnitude of the struggle. The fight blends lightsaber dueling with impressive displays of Force power—throwing massive platforms and manipulating the environment—to create a tense, large-scale confrontation. It ends unresolved, leaving Yoda to retreat and the Emperor to consolidate power.

8. Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Vader (A New Hope)

Obi-Wan vs Vader New Hope

“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.”

Onboard the Death Star, Obi-Wan faces his former apprentice in a brief but pivotal duel. It’s restrained—an almost classical match rather than an acrobatic display—but its emotional weight is enormous. Obi-Wan’s deliberate choice to let himself be struck becomes one of cinema’s most enigmatic and influential sacrifices, shaping Luke’s journey and the saga’s mythology.

7. Rey & Finn vs Kylo Ren (The Force Awakens)

Rey Finn vs Kylo Ren

“You need a teacher! I can show you the ways of the Force!”

In a snowy forest on Starkiller Base, the inexperienced Finn and Rey face Kylo Ren. The Sequel trilogy dials back Prequel flamboyance for a rawer, grittier exchange. Ren’s unstable, cracked blade feels dangerous, and the fight’s brutality—Finn’s serious injuries and Rey’s sudden attunement to the weapon—creates a tense emotional arc. The duel is as much about psychological dominance as it is about technique, and it marks a major moment of awakening for Rey.

6. Rey vs Kylo Ren (The Rise of Skywalker)

Rey vs Kylo Rise of Skywalker

“The Dark Side is in our nature. Surrender to it!”

Rey and Kylo clash atop the ruined second Death Star as waves crash around them. The setting is tailor-made for a lightsaber duel—narrow walkways, collapsing platforms and relentless environmental danger. Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley bring visceral physicality to their performances, and the blend of practical effects and digital work makes the sequence feel immediate and cinematic. It’s emotionally charged and visually dazzling, one of the sequel era’s best action pieces.

5. Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader (Return of the Jedi)

Luke vs Vader Return of the Jedi

“If you will not fight, then you will meet your destiny!”

Before the Emperor and the assembled fleet, Luke faces his father in a duel that’s heavy with emotion and moral conflict. Having learned Vader’s identity and his own capacity for anger, Luke alternates between restraint and fury as he tries to redeem his father. The duel’s emotional stakes—love, temptation, and sacrifice—make it one of the saga’s most powerful encounters, even as it culminates in tragic choices and ultimate redemption.

4. Rey & Kylo Ren vs Snoke’s Praetorian Guards (The Last Jedi)

Praetorian Guards battle Last Jedi

“I see him turning the lightsaber to strike true. And now, foolish child, he ignites it, and kills his true enemy!”

After Kylo unexpectedly kills Snoke, he and Rey fight back-to-back against a room full of lethal Praetorian Guards. The sequence is a surprise highlight: inventive choreography, bold camera work and sudden, startling violence elevate it far beyond a mere spectacle. The teamwork between Rey and Kylo—combined with inventive weapons and a relentless tempo—makes this duel one of the most stylish and memorable in the franchise.

3. Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader (The Empire Strikes Back)

Vader vs Luke Empire Strikes Back

“The Force is with you, young Skywalker. But you are not a Jedi yet.”

Luke’s first real test against Darth Vader unfolds across Cloud City, moving from the carbon-freezing chamber to maintenance shafts and vast gantries. The duel builds tension through shifting locations and escalating stakes, culminating in one of cinema’s most famous revelations. The choreography is dynamic and purposeful, matching the film’s darker tone and making the fight both a physical contest and a crucial emotional turning point.

2. Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul (The Phantom Menace)

Phantom Menace lightsaber battle

“We’ll handle this.”

The three-way duel through Naboo’s power generators set a new bar for Star Wars swordplay. Fast, acrobatic and matched to John Williams’ “Duel of the Fates,” the sequence is cinematic adrenaline—the fluid transitions, stark lighting and escalating stakes make it a defining lightsaber battle. Ray Park’s Maul and the two Jedi create a tense, athletic contest that still influences action choreography across the genre.

1. Anakin Skywalker vs Obi-Wan Kenobi (Revenge of the Sith)

Obi-Wan vs Anakin Revenge of the Sith

“You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you!”

On volcanic Mustafar, Obi-Wan and Anakin tear their friendship apart in a ferocious duel that is equal parts physical spectacle and emotional catharsis. For years fans knew that a final showdown had taken place; seeing it unfold delivers immense payoff. The choreography—intense, fast and carefully rehearsed—paired with the hostile, molten environment turns the sequence into an operatic finale: a shattering, tragic resolution that defines how Anakin becomes Vader.
