The winners of the 76th EE BAFTA Film Awards were revealed at the Southbank Centre in London on Sunday, 19 February 2023. The ceremony celebrated the finest achievements in film from 2022, with All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin among the night’s biggest winners.
The event was hosted live for attendees by BAFTA-nominated actor Richard E. Grant and co-hosted on stage by British television presenter Alison Hammond. Across an evening of tributes and presentations, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts presented awards recognizing outstanding artistic and technical contributions to cinema. Twenty awards were presented, honoring films and filmmakers across a range of categories from acting and directing to technical crafts and emerging talent.
All Quiet on the Western Front emerged as a major winner, securing Best Film and Best Director for Edward Berger. The film also earned awards in categories including Film Not in the English Language, Adapted Screenplay and Original Score, reflecting its broad critical and technical acclaim. The Banshees of Inisherin received recognition as Outstanding British Film and won awards in Supporting Actor and Original Screenplay, highlighting the strength of British and Irish filmmaking represented at the ceremony.
The televised broadcast used a tape delay to align with live proceedings, catching up to the in-person ceremony in time for the final, most anticipated awards: Leading Actor, Leading Actress, and Best Film. This approach allowed viewers at home to experience the climax of the evening in near-real time while the event unfolded on stage for guests.
Richard E. Grant delivered a warm and often humorous turn as host, providing light moments throughout the evening. One particularly moving moment came during the In Memoriam segment, where he became visibly emotional while honoring those from the film community who passed away. Musically, the ceremony featured performances that paid tribute to both artistry and storytelling. Performer Ariana DeBose offered a medley celebrating powerful female roles on screen, while British artist Little Simz performed her acclaimed song “Heart on Fire,” receiving praise for an energetic live set.
Sandy Powell, an iconic costume designer whose work spans landmark films across several decades, was honored with the BAFTA Fellowship, the Academy’s highest career achievement award. Powell’s acceptance speech emphasized the collaborative nature of filmmaking and acknowledged the many behind-the-scenes professionals whose contributions shape the films audiences love.
In the only category decided by public vote, the EE Rising Star Award was presented to Emma Mackey for her performance in Emily. The accolade recognized Mackey’s breakout work and public appeal, selected from a shortlist that included Aimee Lou Wood, Daryl McCormack, Naomi Ackie and Sheila Atim.
