One of Hollywood’s fastest-rising talents, Florence Pugh (known for Midsommar and Fighting With My Family) has landed another lead role. Pugh will headline Universal Pictures’ film adaptation of The Maid, a whodunit based on the forthcoming debut novel by Nita Prose. Both Pugh and Prose are attached to the project as producers, signaling a close creative collaboration between the author and the film’s star.

Pugh had a critically acclaimed 2019, starring in Fighting With My Family, Midsommar and Little Women.
Universal has described The Maid as a story with echoes of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine—Gail Honeyman’s celebrated novel—combined with the classic structure and intrigue of an Agatha Christie murder mystery. In the film, Pugh will portray Molly, a hotel maid who becomes entangled in a lethal mystery lurking beneath the surface of her workplace. The premise positions the central character as both observer and reluctant participant, offering the kind of character-driven suspense that can highlight Pugh’s emotional range and talent for portraying complex, quietly intense characters.
The Maid adds to an already substantial and varied slate of projects for Pugh. She is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role of Yelena Belova in Black Widow, a move that marks her first major step into superhero territory. Black Widow—originally delayed but scheduled for release in May 2021—will introduce Pugh’s Yelena to mainstream franchise audiences; the character is expected to carry on elements of the Black Widow legacy consistent with the comics. Yelena has also been announced to appear in the Hawkeye spin-off series for Disney+.
Outside the MCU, Pugh has solidified her reputation as one of the most compelling actresses working today. She earned widespread recognition for her performance in director Ari Aster’s Midsommar and further cemented her standing with a memorable turn as Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, a role that resulted in an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Those performances showcased Pugh’s versatility—from unsettling psychological intensity to the period drama’s nuanced emotionality—and helped establish her as a performer capable of carrying major films.
Production for The Maid will include producers Josh McLaughlin and Chris Goldberg, who are set to co-produce alongside Pugh and Nita Prose through their respective companies, Wink Pictures and Winterlight Pictures. The involvement of both the novel’s author and the lead actress in producing roles suggests an adaptation that aims to preserve the novel’s distinct voice and character focus while shaping the story for the screen.
At this stage, Universal has not announced a release date for the film adaptation. The source novel is expected to be published in 2022, which will provide readers with the original material ahead of the film’s development and possible production timeline.
Florence Pugh’s career trajectory—marked by critically lauded performances, a major awards nomination, and entry into the Marvel franchise—makes her a high-profile choice to lead a mystery thriller centered on an observant, unconventional protagonist. The Maid presents an opportunity to blend literary source material with Pugh’s capacity for layered character work, and the project will be watched closely by fans of both the actress and smart, character-driven mysteries.
