Following its announcement at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, the next Marvel Avengers film has found its director. Destin Daniel Cretton, best known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will helm the ensemble superhero project scheduled for 2025.
Few plot details have been revealed so far, but the film’s title is confirmed as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. The movie is expected to position Kang as the new principal antagonist of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the era dominated by Thanos. Actor Jonathan Majors, who previously appeared as a version of Kang in the Disney+ series Loki, is reported to play the interdimensional conqueror and is also involved in the upcoming film Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.
Before joining the Marvel fold, Cretton built a reputation directing smaller, character-driven films such as Just Mercy and Short Term 12. His transition to big-budget franchise filmmaking came with Shang-Chi, which introduced a martial-arts hero to the MCU and starred Simu Liu with notable supporting performances from Awkwafina and Tony Leung. That film was both a commercial success and well received by many critics, and Cretton is expected to remain creatively involved with the property going forward.
Cretton’s appointment to direct an Avengers film mirrors the pathway taken by other filmmakers who rose through Marvel’s ranks. The Russo brothers, for example, moved from directing character-focused entries to leading the studio’s most financially successful ensemble films, demonstrating how Marvel often promotes directors who have proven they can handle standalone features and larger-scale storytelling.
The announcement of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty arrived alongside a slate of other projects revealed at SDCC, which set out several dates and titles for the studio’s near-term plans. Among the lineup are the next installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Captain America: New World Order, and the return of Charlie Cox as Daredevil in a new Disney+ series titled Daredevil: Born Again. These titles form part of Marvel’s continuing Phase 5 schedule and help bridge into the studio’s broader long-term strategy.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige also sketched out the beginning of Phase 6, which will open with the studio’s reboot of the Fantastic Four. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is slated to be released on 2 May 2025 and will serve as the first of a two-part culmination intended to close out Phase 6 and the Multiverse Saga. The second part, Avengers: Secret Wars, is scheduled six months later for 7 November 2025. As of the announcement, a director for Secret Wars had not been named.
Feige has indicated that the studio is exploring different creative directions for the future of the franchise. While some fans and commentators have speculated about potential returning directors such as the Russo brothers, Feige has clarified that the Russos were not attached to Secret Wars at the time of the announcement.
The incoming slate of films marks another turning point for the MCU, shifting focus toward a multiverse-centered storyline with Kang at the center of the next major conflict. Cretton’s appointment suggests Marvel is placing trust in directors who can balance character drama with large-scale action, a balancing act that will be crucial for any film that carries the Avengers title.
With production still in early stages and many creative details yet to emerge, fans will likely see more concrete casting news, story direction, and production updates in the months and years ahead. For now, Cretton’s role as director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty sets expectations for a film that aims to be both expansive in scope and grounded in character work, continuing Marvel Studios’ pattern of pairing experienced genre filmmakers with its most ambitious cinematic projects.
