9. Ant-Man & the Wasp

Marvel Studios
Director: Peyton Reed
Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Michael Douglas, Walton Goggins, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, T.I., Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Pfeiffer
Ant-Man and the Wasp is far from a bad movie, but it feels like a safe sequel that revisits familiar Marvel territory rather than breaking new ground. The film introduces welcome additions — notably Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Pfeiffer — and weaves a reasonably coherent villain arc. Still, it deliberately distances itself from the larger Avengers storyline, which reduces the sense of urgent stakes. Without the surprise and novelty of the original Ant-Man, this installment relies on charm and comedy more than bold storytelling. It’s entertaining and worth watching, especially for fans of Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, but it leans toward familiar franchise formulas.
8. Venom

Sony Pictures
Director: Ruben Fleischer
Starring: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate
Venom polarized audiences but stood out because it felt different. Reminiscent of early 2000s comic-book films in tone and grit, the movie leans into dark humor and explicit violence. Tom Hardy gives a committed and often entertaining performance, reveling in the role’s oddball energy. Much of the film is absurd and sometimes uneven, yet that unpredictability is part of its appeal. As a new cinematic take on a well-known antihero, Venom succeeds by embracing its own eccentric identity, even if it’s not to every viewer’s taste.
7. Incredibles 2

Disney·Pixar
Director: Brad Bird
Starring: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Catherine Keener, Bob Odenkirk, Samuel L. Jackson
Anticipation for Incredibles 2 ran high, and while the film delivers plenty of fun and family-friendly action, it often echoes the first movie too closely. Shifting the spotlight to Elastigirl provides fresh moments and comedic beats, but several character arcs and plot twists feel recycled or predictable. The villain’s motives are telegraphed early, and the sequel sometimes lacks the original’s spark of invention. Still, it remains an enjoyable, well-crafted animated feature that offers plenty of heart and humor.
6. Aquaman

Warner Bros.
Director: James Wan
Starring: Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Temuera Morrison, Ludi Lin
Aquaman provided a visually impressive and energetic entry for DC. The film embraces epic, oceanic scale and delivers striking set pieces reminiscent of fantasy blockbusters. Jason Momoa’s charismatic performance anchors the story, and James Wan’s direction injects personality and spectacle. The movie isn’t without flaws: some dialogue and character beats are predictable, and a few sequences play it safe. Still, Aquaman marked a clear step forward for the studio and proved to be a visually compelling, crowd-pleasing adventure.
5. Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

Warner Bros. Animation
Directors: Aaron Horvath, Peter Rida Michail
Starring: Greg Cipes, Scott Menville, Khary Payton, Tara Strong, Hynden Walch, Will Arnett, Kristen Bell, Michael Bolton, Greg Davies, Nicolas Cage
What began as a zany TV show becomes a surprisingly clever, self-aware movie. Teen Titans Go! To the Movies brims with meta-humor, fourth-wall gags, and jokes for both kids and adults. The plot is straightforward—Robin seeks fame and recognition—but the film’s relentless comedic energy, pop-culture parodies, and spot-on character jokes elevate it. Memorable cameos and a heartfelt streak make this animated feature an unexpected highlight of the year, balancing silly fun with sharp satire.
“You’re not the Justice League? Then you must be the Guardians of the Galaxy?”
“I did have a movie, but we don’t talk about it.” – Green Lantern
“The plutonium crystal, the perfect plot device.” – Slade
4. Deadpool 2

20th Century Fox
Director: David Leitch
Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller
Deadpool 2 continues the franchise’s irreverent, R-rated approach to superhero cinema. Ryan Reynolds maintains a perfect comic rhythm as the titular antihero, and the film includes wildly inventive set pieces—most notably the hilarious, self-aware X-Force sequence. While the sequel carries the weight of high expectations and follows the massive cultural moment of other ensemble blockbusters, it still earned strong box office returns and reinforced that adult-oriented superhero films can be both profitable and creatively bold.
3. Black Panther

Marvel Studios
Director: Ryan Coogler
Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker
Black Panther became a cultural phenomenon, offering representation and a compelling, emotionally resonant story centered on identity, legacy, and responsibility. Ryan Coogler’s direction grounds the film in character-driven drama while delivering memorable world-building and vibrant visuals. Each principal character feels fully realized, and the film’s themes resonated widely. Minor shortcomings in CGI and some subplots keep it from claiming the very top spot here, but Black Panther remains one of 2018’s most important and well-crafted superhero films.
2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

Sony Pictures Animation
Directors: Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman
Starring: Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage
Into the Spider-Verse was a revelation: bold, innovative animation paired with a fresh take on the Spider-Man mythos. The film’s stylistic approach—heavily influenced by comic-book art—creates kinetic, expressive visuals that feel literally handcrafted for the medium. The story introduces Miles Morales with warmth and humor while celebrating multiple Spider-characters in a way that’s both emotionally satisfying and wildly inventive. It’s one of the best animated superhero films ever made and easily the standout animated release of 2018.
1. Avengers: Infinity War

Marvel Studios
Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Zoe Saldana, Elizabeth Olsen, Josh Brolin
“What did it cost?”
“What did it cost?” — “Everything.”
Avengers: Infinity War is the defining superhero event of 2018, and arguably one of the greatest ensemble superhero films ever made. As the culmination of Marvel’s first two cinematic phases, the film delivers stakes, scale, and emotional payoff on a staggering level. With a vast roster of characters, Infinity War balances multiple storylines while building to a devastating, unforgettable climax. The Russo brothers crafted a film in which every moment feels consequential, and the result was a cultural phenomenon that resonated with fans and critics alike. For sheer ambition, scope, and dramatic impact, it earns the top spot for 2018.
