Over time the franchise’s shifts in tone have become clearer. After the 2013 remake attempted a harsher, more realistic interpretation, 2023’s Evil Dead Rise follows a similar path while refining certain aspects. Where earlier films leaned into camp and comic violence, this newer strand emphasizes graphic, bone-crunching brutality and relentless tension.
Set primarily in an apartment block, Evil Dead Rise uses its vertical, confined environment to create tense set pieces and inventive staging. The contained setting delivers momentum and variety, and the film occasionally embraces the absurd in ways that land effectively. However, the characters are not deeply developed, and the emotional stakes suffer as a result. When you don’t care who survives, the horror risks becoming spectacle without resonance.
If watched purely for visceral thrills and inventive kills, Evil Dead Rise can be satisfying and entertaining. Yet its lean toward unrelenting harshness—sound design that foregrounds bone and skin—means it often trades the franchise’s irreverent spirit for a more punishing kind of horror. It’s an accomplished entry in its own right, but one that ultimately feels less memorable than the best of the original series.
3. Army of Darkness (1992)

Ranking the original trilogy is challenging because each film approaches the material so differently. Army of Darkness stands out as the most outlandish and gleefully campy entry—arguably the purest distillation of what makes the series beloved. It amplifies the comedy, the slapstick gore, and Bruce Campbell’s star turn as the fast-talking, chain-saw-wielding Ash Williams.
Transplanting Ash to the Middle Ages gives the film fresh terrain for over-the-top set pieces: the Good Ash versus Evil Ash duel, the army of skeletons, and the absurd mini-Ash attack are highlights that showcase the movie’s creative imagination. The film’s pacing is imperfect in places, but its relentless energy and charm largely compensate.
Army of Darkness is a rollicking, fun-packed ride and an excellent gateway for newcomers. Its comedic bravado, memorable lines, and spectacle make it a lasting fan favorite and a high point of the franchise’s adventurous side.
