The Film Magazine to Remain Online for Six More Years
Dearest readers,
It is with enormous pride and heartfelt gratitude that I announce today, 22 January 2024, that The Film Magazine will remain online for an additional six years. Thanks to an extraordinary outpouring of support from readers, friends, and generous strangers, we have exceeded our fundraising target and secured renewal funding through 2030.
In a matter of just 24 hours, supporters rallied behind the urgent appeal I described in my previous statement. Their collective generosity not only met our initial three-year renewal goal but surpassed it, covering the six-year renewal total instead. This swift and decisive response was both unexpected and profoundly moving — one of the most affirming moments in the publication’s history.
These supporters contributed more than £700 to guarantee that our archive of over 2.5 million words—reviews, essays, interviews, and longform features—remains freely accessible on the internet. Those donations protect the long-term availability of the research, criticism, and creative writing that define The Film Magazine and preserve a valuable resource for cinephiles, students, critics, and filmmakers.

This vote of confidence reassures us that our work matters. It confirms that a readership values thoughtful film criticism, original reporting, and serious cultural conversation. To know there are people who care about the perspectives we publish, the filmmakers we highlight, and the causes we explore is deeply meaningful to the entire team.
We will remember this day and use the trust you have placed in us as a guiding light. The support we received is both validation and motivation: validation of our editorial approach and motivation to continue improving the site, expanding coverage, and serving our audience with integrity and ambition.
Moving forward, our mission is clear and intentionally simple:
- Grow organically while remaining true to our editorial values. We will expand coverage thoughtfully, prioritize original criticism and reporting, and invest in contributors who bring depth and fresh perspectives to film discourse.
- Avoid future renewal appeals. We aim to manage resources conservatively so that we will not need to ask readers for renewal funding again. The plan is to build sustainable income streams while maintaining free access to our archive and most content.
Cinema is our passion. Everyone involved with The Film Magazine—editors, writers, designers, and contributors—has devoted time and expertise to exploring film in all its forms. Our team is committed, knowledgeable, and creative; our contributors are imaginative and rigorous. Because of your generosity, that expertise and enthusiasm will remain available to readers through at least 2030.
Thank you for lighting the way during a difficult moment. Your support means the world to us and allows us to continue our work: covering independent and international cinema, unearthing overlooked titles, and advancing thoughtful criticism that elevates the conversation around film and culture.
Sincerely,
Joseph Wade
