The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced the nominees for the 2018 EE BAFTA Film Awards on Tuesday, 9 January 2018. The ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 18 February 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. This year’s nominations feature a mix of international blockbusters, acclaimed indie films and standout British productions across the awards’ major categories.
Leading the nominations is Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which earned the most nods of the year with 12 nominations. Two other major contenders — Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Darkest Hour — follow closely, each receiving nine nominations. Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk also performed strongly, with eight nominations each. British independent film Lady Macbeth received notable recognition as both an Outstanding British Film nominee and as a contender in the Outstanding Debut category.
The year’s nominations underline the range of films honoured by BAFTA: from genre and science-fiction achievements such as Blade Runner 2049 to intimate dramas like Call Me By Your Name and the historical portrayal in Darkest Hour. The mix demonstrates BAFTA members’ appreciation for diverse storytelling, technical craft and strong performances.
In a late change to plans for the broadcast, Stephen Fry stepped down as host of the awards. BAFTA announced that author, actress and activist Joanna Lumley will take on hosting duties for the ceremony. Lumley reacted to the appointment with enthusiasm, noting how long she has followed BAFTA and expressing her excitement at being involved in the event.
