The 2019 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) took place on Sunday 10 February 2019 at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and were presented by Joanna Lumley. The ceremony saw Yorgos Lanthimos’s period comedy-drama The Favourite and Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma dominate the evening, each taking multiple major prizes across categories that recognize filmmaking achievements from the past year.
Standout moments of the night included an emotional acceptance from EE Rising Star winner Letitia Wright, who spoke candidly about nearly leaving the industry before breaking through with roles in Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. Olivia Colman’s warm and witty Best Actress speech for The Favourite captured the audience’s affection as she graciously acknowledged her co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. And the BAFTA Fellowship was awarded to editor Thelma Schoonmaker, whose poised, grateful and heartfelt remarks reminded the audience why the Fellowship honors those considered among cinema’s all-time greats.
Sponsored by EE, the BAFTAs are a key event in the awards season calendar and often signal frontrunners for the Oscars. This year’s results also highlighted a selection of films and filmmakers that were underrepresented among the 2019 Oscar nominations, offering a distinct set of winners that emphasized both international cinema and British filmmaking talent.
