The 77th Golden Globe Awards were held on Sunday, 5 January 2020, live from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) gathered to recognise the year’s most notable achievements in film and television, with British comedian Ricky Gervais returning to host the evening. The ceremony highlighted both mainstream studio fare and acclaimed independent films, delivering several expected outcomes as well as a few surprises.
In film categories, the war drama 1917 emerged as one of the night’s biggest winners, taking home awards for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director for Sam Mendes. Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor – Drama for his intense performance in Joker, and Renee Zellweger secured Best Actress – Drama for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy. In the comedy or musical categories, Quentin Tarantino’s nostalgic Once Upon a Time in Hollywood won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, while Awkwafina surprised many by taking Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for her leading role in The Farewell.
Other notable winners included Taron Egerton for Best Actor – Musical or Comedy for Rocketman, Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Laura Dern for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Marriage Story. The foreign-language film Parasite won the Best Foreign Language Film category, underscoring the international acclaim the South Korean drama had been receiving throughout awards season. Meanwhile, Netflix’s high-profile release The Irishman received multiple nominations but left the ceremony without awards.
