Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and two-time acting nominee Sandra Hüller are among the most celebrated films and performers recognised at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards. Notable absences from the nomination list include Greta Gerwig, Lily Gladstone, Martin Scorsese and Andrew Scott.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts revealed its nominations for the best films of 2023 during a live press conference from London on Thursday 18 January 2024. EE Rising Star nominees Naomi Ackie and Kingsley Ben-Adir announced the full slate of contenders across the major categories.
Leading awards season titles Oppenheimer and Poor Things dominated the nominations, together amassing 24 nods and appearing in many of the principal categories. However, there were surprises: Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos did not receive a Best Director nomination, despite previous recognition for his earlier work. Similarly, Lily Gladstone—who had been viewed as a potential frontrunner for Leading Actress in the absence of other longlisted contenders—was not included among the nominees. Leonardo DiCaprio, co-star of Killers of the Flower Moon, was also absent from the Leading Actor category.
The 2024 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will be hosted by actor David Tennant and is scheduled for Sunday 18 February 2024.
