Thank You for Saving Us: The Film Magazine’s Future

Dearest Readers,

It is with the utmost pride and honour that I write to inform you today, 22 January 2024, that The Film Magazine will remain online for at least six more years. This announcement comes after an extraordinary and deeply moving outpouring of support from our readers and friends, who answered our recent appeal with generosity and urgency.

In my previous statement, titled “We Need Your Help – A Statement on Our Future,” I outlined the very real risk facing our archive and operations. Thanks to the life-affirming kindness of many supporters, we were not only able to avert that immediate threat but also surpassed our original three-year renewal target, reaching the six-year renewal figure in less than 24 hours. This outcome was unexpected and profoundly uplifting — perhaps the finest possible surprise for everyone who cares for independent film coverage and cultural criticism.

These readers — some longtime subscribers, some recent visitors, some complete strangers — collectively contributed more than £700 to secure our archive and keep our website accessible. That sum will help preserve over 2.5 million words of reviews, essays, interviews and reportage that document cinema across eras, cultures and perspectives. For a small, dedicated publication, that collective investment means continuity for writers, researchers and film lovers alike.

With all of our hearts, thank you. Your support is an affirmation of the work we do: celebrating cinema, interrogating art and amplifying underrepresented voices. Knowing that there are people who value our mission, our editorial integrity and our commitment to thoughtful, rigorous writing is immensely encouraging. This show of confidence ensures that the conversations we host and the archival material we maintain will remain available to readers and scholars for years to come.

This supreme vote of confidence stands as one of the most life-affirming moments I can personally recall. It underscores that independent cultural journalism still matters and that people are willing to defend and sustain it. We will never forget this day. Instead, we will use this overwhelming support as a beacon to guide our future editorial decisions and long-term planning.

Our mission moving forward is simple and resolute. We aim to pursue two clear objectives that reflect our principles and respect our supporters:

  • To grow organically while remaining true to our values. We will continue to prioritise quality over speed, in-depth analysis over ephemeral trends, and thoughtful coverage of both established and emerging filmmakers. Organic growth means strengthening the editorial voice, expanding the diversity of contributors and enhancing accessibility without compromising standards.
  • To never ask for another penny towards renewals again. The immediate renewal need has been met thanks to you, and we commit to building sustainable models — through partnerships, responsible budgeting and planned fundraising only when essential — so that we do not put future continuity solely on urgent appeals.

Cinema is our passion. Everyone involved with The Film Magazine has freely given time and expertise to explore film culture, write about it with care, illuminate lesser-known work and critique films that demand attention. Our editorial team is educated, passionate and dedicated. Our contributors are imaginative and skilled. Your contributions have ensured that this collective knowledge, creativity and critical energy will remain accessible at least until 2030.

By securing the site for the next six years, you have preserved reviews, interviews, essays and archival content that inform, inspire and educate readers around the world. This preservation supports filmmakers, critics, students and anyone who values thoughtful engagement with cinema. We will continue to publish work that challenges, informs and celebrates film as an art form and cultural practice.

Thank you again for lighting the way through a difficult moment. Your generosity has made a tangible difference and reaffirmed our belief in community-driven journalism. We are deeply grateful and committed to honoring that trust through diligent, conscientious editorial work.

Sincerely,

Joseph Wade
